Abstract
The Somssich Hill 2 locality (South Hungary, Villány Hills) yielded the richest late Early Pleistocene vertebrate fauna from Hungary and one of the richest ones from the Carpathian Basin. The assemblage contains 67 distinguishable mammal taxa. The present paper gives the taxonomic, biostratigraphical and palaeoecological evaluation of 19 taxa of the sensu lato macromammal remains (leporids, carnivores, ungulates). The material indicates late Early Pleistocene age and represents the so-called Epivillafranchian faunal turnover and a dominantly cold steppe palaeoenvironment.
