Abstract
In January 1579, Bálint Balassi beat up the servant of a notable citizen of Selmecbánya (now Banská Štiavnica) in the spa of Vihnye (now Vyhne). The town sent him a letter of reprimand, asking him, among other things, to refrain from such tragedies in the future. Balassi wrote a long letter in response, explaining what he thought had really happened, and then flatly denied that he had ever directed or acted in a tragedy or even a comedy. Ten years later, however, he wrote his comedy about Thyrsis and Angelica, based on Castelletti’s pastoral drama Amarilli.
