Abstract
Building with earth has its limits, but it is perfectly adequate as a loadbearing structure for low-rise residential buildings. Even so the share of earthen buildings developed for newly built residential buildings is extremely low. The challenges of incorporating earthen construction into the current building industry are assessed. Substantial research data is reviewed from the literature concerning the environmental benefits of building with earth. Earth construction in general shows great potential in reducing the embodied energy and global warming potential of the built environment.
