Abstract
A general ageing of the organism, including hormonal, psychological, and cognitive changes, affects the person’s speech production. The most important change is the slowdown of speech tempo and articulation rate. However relatively few papers are specifically devoted to speech rate in very old (90+ years old) people’s speech. In the present paper, we examine the speech rate and the characteristics of pausing of very old (aged between 90-96) speakers, and we compare their results with speech of young-old (aged between 60-66), old-old (aged between 75-85), and centenarian speakers. The results show that there are differences between the age groups with respect to the speech tempo and articulation rate, but there were no differences in the frequency of pauses, and in the duration of speech utterances and hesitations.
