Abstract
The sharp debates of the language reform era were preceded by the Debrecen conflicts of Kazinczy Ferenc (1759–1831), who saw the Debrecen Grammar as an attack on his literary language reform programme. His literary and stylistic efforts were aimed not only at the adoption of Western cultural models, but also at the Western modelling of the Hungarian language. Foreign phonetics became fashionable, and one of the main tools in the search for novelty. The deliberate use of foreignisms and mirror translations led the authors of the Grammatika to criticise the Hungarian language; in line with the great European linguistic turn of the time, they undertook to defend the ‘genius’ of the Hungarian language. Although the attempts to introduce grammatical gender and similarly bold solutions were accompanied by problems of linguistic aesthetics, the foreignness of ‘invented languages’ and the freedom of literary language creation sometimes served as a means of value-bearing experimentation. Although Kazinczy declared the superiority of his own views, time has proved that the ‘Debrecenicism’, based on the principle of ‘collective anticipation’, has also done its indispensable work, both in terms of the appreciation of linguistic peculiarities and of popular appropriation.
