Abstract

Dual-purpose crops hold great potential to reduce the issue of separated land for fodder and food production. The present investigation highlighted the performance of twenty oat genotypes for antioxidant potential under a dual system i.e. vegetative phase (V) and grain (G). Antioxidant capability of bioactive components was assessed by scavenging 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, nitric oxide radicals and also by assessment of total reducing power (TRP) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The DPPH radical scavenging activity (RSA), FRAP, TRP, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (HRSA) and nitric oxide radical scavenging activity (NORSA) ranged between 48.8–64.8%, 7.4–11.1 mg g−1, 21.3–58.6 mg g−1, 37.0–55.3% and 37.0–42.9% in the vegetative phase and 33.6–68.2%, 1.00–3.26 µmol g−1, 28.2–68.6 mg g−1, 23.8–53.8% and 69.4–88.0% in the grain. The total phenols, flavonoids and alkaloids ranged between 1.86–3.46 mg g−1, 2.07–4.45 mg g−1 and 24.1–49.8 µg g−1 in the vegetative state and 1.13–2.86 mg g−1, 103–175 µg g−1 and 10.3–30.2 µg g−1 in the grain. The bioactive components were moderate to high in cluster 4 genotypes leading to high antiradical activities; TRP (V + G), hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (V + G), NORSA (G), FRAP (G). The cluster 2 genotypes had high DPPH RSA (V + G) and FRAP (V + G) but lower content of bioactive components. So these bioactive components do not significantly contribute to DPPH RSA and FRAP. Overall, the genetic diversity contributed to variation in antioxidant potential of different oat varieties under a dual system. Additionally, the study would be useful to identify best parental combinations so the hybrids thus produced have the required combinational traits.
