Abstract

Kornai János önéletrajza nem csupán a közgaszdászok, hanem szélesebb olvasóközönség számára íródott. Beszámol arról a nagy szellemi utazásról, amelyen ifjúsága eszméitől, tévutakon át, eljutott későbbi gondolatrendszeréhez, a szocialista rendszer átfogó bírálatához és a posztszocialista fejlődés problémáinak elemzéséhez. | The title and the subtitle are expressing to some extent the genre of the book. It is irregular, because it is a special blend of short essays on economics, science, methodology, ethics, politics -- and also a more regular autobiography about the author's life. The author, János Kornai, began his adult life as an ardent believer in socialism and then became a critic of the communist political and economic system. He lost family members in the Holocaust, contributed to the ideological preparation of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, and became a theorist of the post-Soviet economic transition. He has been a journalist, a researcher prohibited from teaching in his home country, and a tenured professor at Harvard University. By Force of Thought traces Kornai's lifetime intellectual journey and offers a subjective complement to his academic research. The memoir describes his research--and includes his present-day evaluation of his past work--as well as the social and political environment in which he did his work. In some sense, that is complementary to the author?s scholarly work based on the study of the socialist system, reform and transformation. There he tried to give an objective picture of the world surrounding him. The memoir is the subjective story of an Eastern European intellectual, before, during and after the socialist system.
