Abstract
Rice is a staple food and well-known cereal plays a critical role in global food security and economics. Assorted varieties of rice grains are currently in high demand in the market. Rice varieties can be differentiated by morphological traits, although some varieties that appear to be identical are genetically distinct. Consequently, sorting out rice grains of different varieties depends upon the parameters like the nutritional characteristics as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis. Compared with traditional assays, the modern high throughput techniques have been focusing and gaining more attention in quality assessment and characterization of rice. In the present review, we aimed to provide detailed information on various technological interventions like hyperspectral image analysis, spectroscopic, phytochemical and molecular analysis to determine the uniqueness of rice grains. These techniques determine key fingerprint of rice variety which is helpful for identification and characterization of the rice grain efficiently. This review epitomizes the methods used for characterization of rice germplasm and will work as imperative guide for its analysis.
