Abstract

The wetlands (berek in Hungarian), situated in the southern shore area of Lake Balaton are the refugia of the former flora and fauna of the ancient bays of the lake. Although these areas are well-known and valuable as the habitats of waterbirds, their fish fauna is almost undiscovered. The fish assemblage of five wetlands (Nagyberek, Ordacsehi-berek, Lellei-berek, Brettyó and Őszödi-berek) have been examined between 2011 and 2013. Alltogether 15 fish species have been collected, from which 3 were protected. From the examined habitats Ordacsehi-berek could considered to be the most valuable in the aspect of nauture conservation, due to the stable population of mudminnow (Umbra krameri). Also imortant, that the abundance of non-indigenous species, mainly the gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) are being high in all habitats.
