Abstract

International treaties play a prominent role among the sources of international law. The study addresses the issue of integrity of international treaties, or more precisely, it deals with the following question: How is it possible to define the whole and uniform character of international treaties? The law of treaties provides several tools by which the parties of an international treaty can affect the content of the agreement. Using these tools, the parties can express their opinions and interests so that they are able to personalize the treaty within certain limits. This flexibility can produce a special result when a treaty has different content for certain parties than for others. This possibility necessarily raises the question how it is possible to describe the whole and uniform character of a treaty. The study creates a definition for the in- tegrity of international treaties in order to answer this question. The expression of integrity has several meanings, one of which refers to the whole and uniform character. This meaning of integrity can be found in several sources, especially in the sources of academic literature, in the materials of the International Court of Justice and the International Law Commission, and the Vienna conventions regulating the law of treaties. Through an analysis of these sources, this study aims to reveal the content and the characteristics of the concept of integrity. The final section turns to an examination of the definition of integrity of international treaties.
