Abstract

Abstract | The pages of mid-nineteenth-century periodicals published in the Hungarian capital reveal that most of the imprint addresses were situated in the Inner City of Pest. Between 1860 and 1865 a series of magazines and newspapers, including A rAny János’ periodicals, Szépirodalmi Figyelő [Literary Observer] (1860–1862) and Koszorú [Garland] (1863–1865), were all published from this relatively small area. This paper identifies the physical proximity of the offices of periodical editors, publishers, and printers, and examines the ur- ban environment that surrounded these premises. It argues that A rAny János, Hungary’s most revered poet and editor at the time, experienced a working environment of interconnected communities with his contemporaries, made possible by the geographical closeness of editorial offices. These entangled networks fostered shared relationships among participants in the print cul- ture of the Inner City of Pest. Finally, the article suggests that the image of the ’lonely editor’, who seemingly works in solitary isolation, should be reconsid- ered since periodical editors have always been part of competition and col- laboration networks created and sustained by the spatial proximity of these organizations
