Abstract
The study examines the salient ethical and legal dilemmas related to assisted reproductive technologies in 21st-century Hungary. It addresses the differences of opinion arising from religious beliefs and clarifies the practice of Hungarian regulation. Data from the last thirty years show a demographic decline, which can be linked to the modern way of life. It is also safe to say that the main reason is the tendency to have children later in life. The main objective of the study is to analyse the legal background of assisted reproductive technologies and to provide a clearer picture of the ethical and religious opinions on the subject while highlighting critical issues that are most topical in today’s society. I would point out that the legislation needs to be refined in order to ensure ethically clearer practice. I would like to support the view that technological development is forcing the modern man to solve ethical problems, by presenting statistics and by describing and evaluating some of the disagreements that have been brought to the public’s attention. I will endeavour to focus on an analysis of domestic legislation, taking into ac- count its shortcomings and, in some respects, its positive aspects. I conclude by outlining possible ways forward and various alternative solutions.
