Abstract
In this paper some theoretical approaches to the translation of Central European literature are examined. After a short preview of relevant theoretical thoughts about the notion of Central Europe, an overview of translation theory with particular attention to the Frege’s concept Bedeutung and Sinn is presented. Through the lens of contrastive linguistics and comparative literature studies, the author of the paper discusses the practice of literary translation. Rethinking Walter Benjamin’s metaphor about the fragments of shattered vessel, the author tries to prove that the translation of culturally contiguous literature demands a more sophisticated approach than the translation of literature from remote cultures.
