Abstract
Among the popular prayer books of Martin von CoChem (1630–1712) which were published in hundreds of editions, Guldener Himmels-Schlüssel [Golden Heaven Key], first published in 1690, is an unusual compilation in several ways. This text is one of the first devotional works by Pater Martin without a Latin pre-edition or earlier version. The title page offers information about the structure of the publication, which is unusual for prayer books. The first part consist of three “terrifying” (erschröcklich) purgatory stories, with which the author aims to promote the use of the prayer book in order for souls to escape from purgatory. The following study focuses on three purgatory stories edited into the compilation called „liber Historico-precatorium” by the censors and their narrative environment in the oeuvre.
