Abstract
Many scholars have been successful in discovering the sources of the miniature stories embedded in Mikes Kelemen’s Letters from Turkey (1717– 1758). However, there still exist stories for which the sources have not yet been discovered or clarified. This study reveals the direct source of two of them (one which has been unknown and one which has been disputed so far): the story of the competing ladies from Brussels; and that of Ibrahim Pasha and Sultan Suleiman’s friendship. At the same time the study brings to attention Madame de Gomez’s Les journées amusantes in the context of a third small story as well. This means that Mikes borrowed not only six, but eight stories from the French authoress’ framed-novelle. The story of Saint Ambrose and Emperor Theodosius is also treated in the above mentioned French book. However, just like the variant found in Claude Fleury’s Ecclesiastical History, it can only be discussed as a possible source of inspiration for Mikes. There are further hints that shed light on Mikes’ intertextual links with his sources.
