Abstract

In this work we discuss the applications of a piezoresistive 3D force measuring MEMS device with special focus on recent uses in autonomous vehicle control. Forsuch applications, the proposed sensor is implanted into the tires of a vehicle. Because ofthe rotation ofthe tires, the produced waveforms display interesting properties which make them suitable for being modelled by so-called adaptive Hermite functions. Such transformations can also be incorporated into neural networks, resulting in simple, interpretable machine learning solutions to heavily nonlinear environmental recognition problems. In this work we review previous applications focusing on the problem of road surface abnormality recognition and provide new, embedded realizations of the above mentioned signal processing algorithms. Ourresults demonstrate that the proposedmeasurement system can be used to detect road abnormalities in real time. In addition, we discuss current research trends and potential other applications ofthe proposed measurement system.
