Abstract
The paper is a shortened version of my article published in English in 2021: Ágnes Máté, “Griseldis Báthory, the Disobedient Bride or the Unsuccessful Taming of a Heretic Shrew”, Odrodzenie i Reformacja w Polsce LXV 2021: 191‒215. It examines the dynastic marriage of Griseldis Báthory with Jan Zamoyski from the young bride’s point of view. I take into consideration both exchange of letters and prints commemorating the wedding, published in Poland, and unpublished sources held in the estates of historian Endre Veress, nowadays in Budapest. I argue that the name given to the Transylvanian bride in her new country became an eternal memento of negotiating political interests and confessional convictions between the two parties. These negotiations ended with a compromise, rather satisfactory only to the female party: the bride changed her name, but in her faith, she remained Protestant till the end.
