Abstract
In the present paper I describe the process that led to the publication of the Ancient Greek-Hungarian bilingual poetry book (Görög versei. Magyar tolmácsolattal) by Ungvárnémeti Tóth László in July, 1818. In the first chapter I analyse previously unidentified early versions of UngvárnémetiTóth’s Ancient Greek poems. I managed to identify ten Ancient Greek poems in a manuscript from March 1814 and in a letter from October 1815, that he later published in a revised form in Hungarian and/or Greek. Through a detailed analysis of the texts, I show how and why Ungvárnémeti Tóth revised his poems as his knowledge of Ancient Greek developed. In the second part of the article, I separate different stages in the long genesis of Ungvárnémeti Tóth’s Greek poems, based on the remarks found in his letters, books and manuscripts. The first period lasted until March 1814, when he sent ten Ancient Greek poems to Kazinczy Ferenc, whom he asked to support him in publishing the texts. The second phase of the work took place in late 1815 and early 1816, when as a medical student in Pest he revised the Greek poems and composed new ones, hoping to publish them soon. This did not happen in 1816, and during this period before the publication of the Hungarian–Greek bilingual volume in July 1818, he wrote further Greek poems, including his most important ones, which imitated the poetry of Pindar. I also examine the intellectual influences on the poet, including the presence of a neo-humanist approach. As an appendix to this article, I publish a new transcription and a Hungarian translation of his early Greek poems sent to Kazinczy in 1814.
