Abstract
SUSTAINABLE AND FOLK ARCHITECTURE, KHONOMA, INDIA; STUDY Historically famous for its warriors this village now serves as Asia's first truly eco destination. The application of sustainable and vernacular architecture is one of the most unique practices in Khonoma. The village, located at an altitude of 1,200 m and spread over an area of 123 square kilometers, has more than eight hundred households. the community is formed by three 'khels' or colonies, consisting of descendants of the same clan. In the past, each colony had its own fortress to protect the inhabitants from enemy attacks. In accordance with the idea of protection, the houses on the hilly terrain are so close to each other, adjoined by projecting roofs which almost cover the streets between them. The village is accessed by cobbled streets and stone steps. The community being selfsustaining by means of hunting, agriculture, and handcrafts.
