Abstract

On the inauguration day of the „Vrije Universiteit” in Amsterdam, the Dutch Reformed theologian and politician Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) and first rector magnificus identified in his oration the differences in the worldviews of people, who took the Bible seriously and of those who did not, as the main reason for the establishment of law studies at this Reformed university. In a series of lectures on state government he gave the students of theology in 1892/93, he expanded this theme as a part of dogmatics. Kuyper posited the development of all fields of human life as a separate goal of common grace, irrespective of the worldview of its actors. In the field of law studies, this will lead to the insight that the formal prerequisites of the rule of law are in agreement with the teachings of the Holy Scripture on God’s sovereignty and man’s fall into sin. Any state government can find facts pointing to God’s rule of the world in human nature and history, but only a Christian government can find the clearly formulated principles through the study of God’s Word. This is why the study of law based on Reformed principles is indispensable.
