Abstract

Ecclesiastical history entered the curriculum of Catholic theological education around the middle of the 18th century as a subject of its own. Its main goal (similarly to its goal today) was to create a historical framework for other theological subjects using the methods of historiography. Since the identity of Roman Catholicism was in greater part formed and influenced by the schism in the 16th century, textbooks and historical studies concerning the Church placed a strong emphasis on the circumstances of the Protestant Reformation, the assessment of the reformers themselves and their work. Furthermore, the subject became uncircumventable in a country as multiconfessional as Hungary. This study wishes to shed light on the changes in perspective concerning the Reformation within Hungarian Catholic ecclesiastical historiography, from its inception to our age. This timeline can be divided into three different periods: the irenic Josephinist perspective (1780–1820), which wished to create countrywide interdenominational peace; the apologetic-polemic perspective (1820–1970), which was oriented towards the expectations of Rome, and which attributed some responsibility to the medieval Church, but did not show any signs of true concern towards the goals of the Protestants; and finally, the adoption of an ecumenical perspective (1970–), also according to Roman expectations, which entails a rereading and reinterpretation of historical sources.
