Abstract

From the very beginning, peregrination was the most important tool for acquiring the highest level of knowledge and new technologies in the fundamentally receptive Hungary. The topic of this study is Márton Ungi’s (1792-1862 ) trip to Gottingen in 1817. Ungi was a graduate student at the theological academy in Debrecen, and later the dean-pastor of Bihardiószeg. He reported on his trip in a letter that survived on the front page of a book (August Hermann Niemeyer: Charakteristick der Bibel, 1794; Ráday Library). Ungi and his fellow students’ route led through Vienna – Prague – Chlumec – Dresden – Leipzig – Weimar – Erfurt. They stayed in Dresden for two days for sightseeing. They saw King Frederick Augustus I of Saxony and a parade of honour, the memorial column of the French general Jean-Victor Moreau. In Leipzig, in the famous “Buchstadt”, the Hungarian students stormed the places selling used books and mainly bought Bibles, as there were not enough copies of the Bible available (not even in German) in Hungary at the beginning of the 19th century. Originally, Márton Ungi wanted to go to Utrecht; however, already in Gottingen, he received a notification that no one could receive a Dutch scholarship without the permission of the Debrecen council and the recommendation of the bishop. Among his first impressions of Gottingen was the nice potato harvest of the region, he mentioned a service dog hauling a cart as a local specialty, as well as oxen and cows harnessed, i.e., German “Zug”. He formed a damning opinion about the religious life in Gottingen: “Atheus people live here”, and there is “only one bad sermon” on Sundays.
