Abstract
None of the political intentions in the background of the deportations from Budapest in 1951 included any action declared against the inhabitants of Budapest who openly professed their Christian commitment. The background of the displacement was, on the one hand, the housing shortage that had already existed since before WWII, and on the other hand, the expulsion of the elite declared class enemies, between the two World Wars. Many Reformed church members also belonged to the latter category, several of whom held secular functions in the church based on its synodal-presbyterian system. In this paper, I intend to argue that the deportation of the Reformed elders and chief elders from Budapest was part of the extensive toolkit of church persecution by the party-state. The partial results of an ongoing research is presented, i.e., the solidarity action in support of the displaced Reformed persons, managed by Dean Imre Szabó of Budapest. According to the current state of research, 130 Reformed elders and chief elders were deported from Budapest.
