Abstract

In 1641, Prince George Rákóczi I donated the congregation of Kolozsvár a golden chalice decorated with medallions and enamel ornaments. At the end of the 19th century this ornamental article of unique beauty had no longer been in use; therefore the session decided to sell it. They wanted to sell the artwork to the Hungarian National Museum at a price of 100,000 crowns, which would have been used for church construction. In spite of long negotiations after 1908, no agreement was reached. In 1914, the chief elder, Bálint Kolosváry, secretly deposited the chalice at the Hungarian National Museum; however, other leaders of the congregation did not know anything about it for years. At the beginning of 1926, the originally requested purchase price was paid; the congregation used this sum of money converted into Lei for the construction of an all girls’ grammar school and a parish house in the city centre.
