Abstract
József Birtha’s life began in the heart of Hungary. Following his career to the end of his activities in Upper Hungary (Felvidék), (today’s Slovakia), we can be sure that this tough, determined man, who sometimes pushed his own truth without listening to others, always worked for the good of Hungary. In fact, in the First World War, in a changing situation at the end of the world war, he became panic-stricken and allowed himself to be swept away by events. This might have been one of the reasons for him to leave the town Léva before the Treaty of Trianon. He had to leave Léva, and not only because, as my research has shown, he was a thorn in the side of those who served the new state. Birtha’s contribution to the building of the Levantine nation is unquestionable, but his disputes with his congregation cast a shadow over his work.
