Abstract
At the beginning of the 20th century, parallel to the crisis of Hungarian liberalism, conservative voices strengthened also within the Reformed Church. István Bernát was one of the leaders of the agrarian movement; he was also a member of the Reformed Synod and vice-president of the Calvin Association. He represented conservative ideas in the press both inside and outside the church. He supported the cooperative movement, strongly condemned the nationalization of church schools and spoke out against many modern moral transgressions. He attacked the socialist movement emerging within the church and supported the large estate system criticized by many. Among other reasons, Bernát fell into the background among Reformed intellectual currents in the 1930s.
