Abstract

In the course of its historical evolution, Russophobia has undergone many changes and manifested itself in many varieties from the early British tradition and fascism/Nazism up to modern forms of „democratic” Russophobia existing in the western center of the world system. In this area, national peculiarities in the Eastern European region have led to the emergence of a special variety of forms of modern Russophobia in various fields from political struggle to memory politics. All these forms are connected by a common motive in historically changing ways and means ‒ geopolitical competition and rivalry of states in the hierarchical structure of the world system, specifically manifested in the struggle that the great powers and their allies are waging for control over markets, trade routes, energy and raw materials sources, and zones of interest, in a word, over accumulation structures of capital. In fact, Russophobia is an ideological justification for the geopolitical expansion of the „collective West”, which, under the banner of democracy, has served as a trigger for the renaissance of wild, authoritarian ethno-nationalism and/or pro-Nazism in Ukraine and throughout Eastern Europe and at the same time was supposed to ensure national cohesion in large and small states of the region, primarily in opposition to Russia.
