Abstract

In the spirit of the Romantic stylistic ideal, Petőfi Sándor tried to move away from the earlier paradigm of literary history, in which ancient motives and literary allusions to antiquity played a prominent role. He nevertheless retained traces of certain pre-Romantic poetic roles, but they were strongly overshad- owed and relativised. The paper points to concrete cases of the repressed pres- ence of the poetic role inherited from classicism in Petőfi’s oeuvre: the influence of ancient authors (Horace , ovid), similarities in motif (e.g. with certain elements of the Metamorphoses), temporal verse games (e.g. the rhyming, breaking into two lines and dividing into stanzas of regular dactylic hexameters). These ancient motives are sometimes hidden in the texts as an undercurrent or are manifested as an open polemic with an ancient idea (e.g. the confrontation with the Horatian philosophy of life). The influence of ovid can also be observed at the level of rhetorical structures and in the motifs of transformation. In the narrative poem Szerelem átka (The Curse of Love), a quadruple transformation takes place. The torment of the transformed characters is immortal, the trans- formation of the characters only deprives them of their previous form, but not of their previous feelings. This is also the case in ancient transfiguration myths; in Ovidian stories, most of the transfigured characters only fail to speak, they can still think and feel.
