Abstract

The article describes a small monograph about Petőfi Sán- dor, which is unknown in bibliographies. The author of the volume is Vértes Dezső, it was published in 1902 in Arad. In the book the author gives a short biography of Petőfi. He chooses poems for the stages of his life’s journey and presents them without analysis. The author of the monograph used Vahot Imre’s memoirs published in 1880 as a source – without citations or references. Thus, the article also deals with Vahot’s work. Vahot’s recollections are considered unreliable by most literary historians. Unfortunately, Vértes accepts Vahot’s inaccuracies or com- pletely unrealistic claims without criticism. A good example of this is the description of Petőfi’s death. At the end of the small monograph there is an “Appendix”, which provides a selection of Petőfi’s prose works. It includes Petőfi’s letters and some newspaper articles. Petőfi’s letters were not widely known in 1902, so this selection is one of the positive aspects of the volume.
