Abstract

In the Early Modern period the image of Hungarians abroad, among many negative aspects, also included some positive elements. Among these were the Bibliotheca Corvina (the library of King Mathias Corvinus in the 15th century), the cult of Hungarian saints in the 17th century and the exceptional soil of the Hegyalja and the medicinal qualities of Tokaj wine. From the mid-16th century for the next 200 years the reports, medical treatises or rumours on Tokaj wine mostly appeared in Latin, less commonly in German. The Hungarian historiographers with a critical bent of the 18th century took up the task of systemizing the published material and examining the truth behind the legends. From the mid-18th century the academic presentation of the Tokaj-Hegyalja district started in Latin, German and from the late 18th–early 19th century also in Hungarian.
