Abstract

Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5, composed in 1934, was first performed by the Kolisch Quartet in Washington, D.C., on 8 April 1935. The public premiere in Hungary took place less than a year later, on 3 March 1936, in Budapest, with the New Hungarian String Quartet. My study attempts to answer the following questions: Why was it not the Waldbauer–Kerpely String Quartet, which had successfully performed Bartók’s quartets, that gave the first performance in Hungary? How did the New Hungarian String Quartet come on the scene? What instructions did Bartók give them? The article also discusses the circumstances of the founding of the New Hungarian String Quartet and the activities of the New Hungarian Music Society and the Hungarian Section of the International Society for New Music in the 1920s and 1930s.
