Abstract

The introduction presents the literary and historical background of Croatian poets Matija Petar Katančić (1750–1825) and Stjepan Adžić (1730–1789), both of whom were active in Buda and Pécs, Hungary, and left behind, inter alia, a body of poetry in Latin as a legacy. The study continues with the determination of the position of the two poets in the context of literary historiography, and the consequent acknowledgment of the status of Matija Petar Katančić in the history of literature as a scientifically well-studied and established author. Stjepan Adžić is, in contrast, described as a completely unknown author of commemorative poetry in Latin, a forgotten cleric from Pécs. The subject matter of the study is a poem in Latin by Matija Petar Katančić called In obitum Stephani Agyich, Canonici V-Eccles., bonarum Artium cultoris18, from the collection called “Fructus auctumnales” (1791). After providing the basic information about the relevant collection of poems and its author, the study proceeds with the analysis of the aforementioned poem, first in the broader context of commemorative and funereal poetry, and then in the narrow context of epigrammatic commemoration of death. The interpretation and analytical readings focus on the poetic and rhetoric discourse on death and identification of the deceased, including the related laudatory speech that bears witness to the fact that Katančić, one of the most erudite writers of the 18th century, acknowledged Adžić’s commemorative poetry in Latin written in Pécs in the period from 1762 until 1788. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to the extraordinary contribution of two Croatian poets, one well-known – Matija Petar Katančić, and one unknown – Stjepan Adžić, to the Latinity of the 18th century, most particularly in the Buda and Pécs cultural and literary circles.
