Abstract
Tranylcypromine influenced the contractile and electrical activities of the isolated and in situ hearts of Helix. Under the influence of tranylcypromine the amplitude of the contractile activity was increased while the frequency was decreased, finally the heartbeat became arrhythmical. ECG ceased after a transient increase in frequency and prolongation of the fast components of ECG. The heart muscle cells were depolarized by tranylcypromine and after the short increase in frequency the generaration of action potentials was eliminated. The tranylcypromine expended the phase of repolarization of action potentials. In time the ECG was eliminated earlier than that of the activity of single cells, showing the difficulties in the propagation of impulses manifested by the appearance of arrhythmia. In the effect of tranylcypromine Ca-ions have a certain role. Several sites of action are suggested in the effect of tranylcypromine: besides its membrane effect the action connected with liberation of monoamines is probable. The significance of accumulation of monoamines, as a consequence of MAO inhibition, does not seem probable in the effect of tranylcypromine on the contractile and electrical activity of Helix heart.
