Abstract
1. Periodically alternating slow and fast periods are distinguishable in the first summer growt h of pike-perch fries in Lake Balaton, increase in measurements is slow and irregular and definitely gradational as regards average body sizes. The size-hierarchy is suggested to be the result of the topographic and seasonal differences in feeding habit and protraction of the period of spawning. 2. Growth is fast until mid-July but slows down subsequently until mid-August. From that time rate of growth increases again except that the increase in body size during autumn decreases to some extent by next spring. 3. In the early stages of postembryonal development the length-weight relationship is indicative of an intensive growth in weight. The changes in condition are in harmony with the rate of growth in length.
