Abstract

1. In River Zala at the time of the water bloom, the number of heterotrophs was very low (1.5-2.7 -10³ cells/ml). In the Keszthely-Bay receding from the inflow the quantity of both the heterotrophic and the total microbial plankton have decreased. The high number of Planctomyces békefii Gimesi (3·10⁴ colonies/ml) and Zooglöa (1.5·lO⁴ colonies/ml) detected in River Zala was absent from the plankton of the Keszthely-Bay. In the lake, the microbial biomass transported by the river decomposed quickly supporting Haranghy’s results for 1934 and so the influence of the river was undetectable at 500 m off the inflow. 2. On the 2nd of August, parallel with the mineralization of the algal biomass, the number of heterotrophs was very high (13-20·10⁴ cells/ml) in River Zala. In the Keszthely-Bay the number of heterotrophs was also high 3.1-12·10⁴ cells/ml) owing to the decreased mineralization capacity of the water and so the decomposition of the high microbial biomass originating from River Zala was slow and prolonged. During the investigations in August the colonies of Planctomyces and Zooglöa were absent from the plankton.
