Abstract

Experiments were made on fresh-water mussel (Anodonta cygnea L.) to establish relationship between neurosecretion observable in the central nervous system and the regulation of the periodic activity of the animal. It has been also examined whether the Gömöri-positive material produced in the nerve cells are emitted in the direction of the adductors. The following establishments were made: 1. In agreement to previous examinations (Baranyi 1964) there is a yearly periodicity in th e production of neurosecretum. 2. The accumulation of secretum is not directly related to the regulation of periodic activity. 3. In periods when there is a considerable secretum production (May-July) the Gömöri-positive material is demonstrable among the nerve fibres and also in the adductors. It is suggested that the accumulation in considerable quantity of the neurosecretum between May and July is related to the sexual cycle. On the other hand, secretum production observable in other periods of the year may probably be related also in other respects to the regulating function of the nervous system.
