Abstract
Well-developed reading comprehension skills and the ability to interpret written texts appropriately in a second language is essential for translators and language teachers. The aim of this study is to examine the reading comprehension level, reading habits and strategies of a group of Hungarian translation and interpretation students, most of whom are also English language teacher trainees, when dealing with texts written in their second language, English. Their reading strategy awareness is measured with an instrument developed by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002); their reading comprehension performance is assessed with the help of the reading comprehension part of a standardized test; correlation is measured between their reading comprehension level, and their ability to translate English texts into Hungarian.
