Abstract
The author studied several English language and Hungarian sources form the 11th to the 21st century to examine how the place names of Hungary became known to English language readers. This paper presents a review of the history of Hungarian place name changes in English maps and in two travelogues, and how the early geographical names in Latin were replaced by mixed names and later by English names. A short introduction of the source publications is followed by a selection of names as printed in the maps in alphabetical order and by an extract from the map. Finally, the author critically analyses the present though still contradictory use of Hungarian place names in English language publications. The examination mostly includes only place names that belong to the present territory of Hungary.
