Abstract

1. The effects of the administration from the beginning of growth to the end of it of 20 mg l-ascorbic or d-gluconic acid can be divided into two groups. One is common in bdth cases and is therefore caused by some identical radical in the molecules, p. e. their acidity. The other can be observed only in the case of ascorbic acid administration and is therefore caused by !the specific anti-scorbutic group of this molecule. 2. The following effects are caused by the acidity of the two molecules: 11.5% greater body weight, 8% greater weight of the fat-free body, 25% increase in the connective fat, and 30% increase of the thymus. The liver, heart, kidneys, suprarenals and thyroids take part equally (with high correlation coefficients) in the increase of the body weight. 3. 40% decrease in the amount of liver glycogen is caused by the acidity of hexuronic acids. The glycogen and protein content of the muscle, the fat and protein content of the liver remain unaltered. The fat content of the muscles shows an increase of 20%. (The fat is probably deposited in the connective cells of the muscles.) 4. The effects observed only in the ascorbic acid-receiving group are: an increase of 100% in the weight of the spleen and an increase of 25% in the ascorbic acid content of liver and suprarenals.
