Abstract

Several years ago Pál Juhász-Nagy already best summarized the importance of biodiversity which is also valid for cultural vegetation: “…an organized protection against perturbances in order to survive.” Pál Bodor collected all the assets of the pomology of Transylvania that he considered important and representative. Due to his agricultural expertise he first introduced more up-to-date West European nursery technologies, and not just applied these methods but managed to place them on a business footing. According to Rapaics in 1940, the acquisition of varieties based on family barters concluded in 1812. The list and partial description of 150 varieties shows that the author took the issue of the viability of varieties very seriously. Apple varieties are mostly winter varieties, in the case of pears autumn ripening varieties dominated, on other fruits contemporary farming capabilities and food culture imposed limitations, though due to the Saxons cherry and sour cherry were present, while in the case of other stone fruits the Balkan-Turkish influences are apparent. What Ferenc Nagy in 1842 and 1853 or Balázs Orbán achieved in their Transylvanian field trips can be considered relevant for the whole of historical Hungary. On the 250th anniversary of the birth of Pál Bokor[sic!] we place particular stress on showing how important it is to preserve the pomology assets of this large area with its characteristic ecological conditions.
