Abstract
The Munkács-Szentmiklós estate, situated in erstwhile Bereg County, was in many respects unique. The property owned by the Schönborn family was one of the largest in terms of area in contemporary East-Central Europe. Its territory formed an unbroken unit stretching from the Northeast Carpathians through the Beregszász Hill District to the outskirts of the Great Plain. Within the Kingdom of Hungary this was the largest entailed property that existed for more than 200 years. This paper mainly concentrates on showing the role of forest management in the life of the estate. First it gives an overview of the precedents of forestry regulations in the Kingdom of Hungary and why the forest law of 1879 is considered such a milestone in that respect. After this the geographic conditions of the estate will be considered to understand the opportunities of the property in terms of forest management. Finally a summary will be given to present the changes in the farming of the estate as a result of the forest law and how the managers of the estate could profit from the available forests.
