Abstract
Adaptation studies are nearly as old as the art of film itself. In recent decades, a number of theoretical approaches have emerged, focusing primarily on the relation between film and literature, as well as on medium specificity, intertextuality, the principle of fidelity and various typological experiments. The first period of adaptation studies was guided by an emphasis on medium specificity. The second phase is characterised by theorists seeking to address the theoretical shortcomings of adaptation studies, while also critiquing the fidelity discourse and media specificity. The third phase is defined by a suspicion of the methodological framework of intertextuality, and above all, by the rise of digital technologies and a culture of convergence, in wich networking, the multiplicity of cultural processes and contextual shifts in global space are also imbricated. This brief introductory essay provides an overview of the principal lines of adaptation studies, including the main theses of international and Hungarian research.
