Abstract
This chapter will focus on the most widely used photochromic molecular switches and light-driven molecular motors describing their structure and operation, along with their key fields of applications. As the main classes of molecular photoswitches, those that undergo photochemical E/Z isomerization around double bonds, and those that work via photochemical cyclization/ring opening reactions are considered.
