Abstract

Brigetio (Komárom/Szőny, Hungary), located on the right side of the Danube, was one of the four Roman legionary bases in Pannonia. This paper summarises the conclusions that can be drawn from the thousands of glass fragments found at Brigetio and the typical types. The glass vessels mainly originate from the 2nd century AD, although the ‘golden age’ occurred during the first half of the 3rd century AD. Most of the fragments are those of tableware and containers, with unguent bottles found in smaller quantities. Among the bowls, a hemispherical deep convex shape with facet-cut design (Isings Form 96) is the most frequently represented type. Especially beautiful are the snake-thread beakers on a stemmed foot, 45 exemplars of which came to light at Brigetio. These are made of colourless glass and decorated with birds and floral ornaments on a surface with chequer-design impressions or stripping. These beakers, which have Eastern parallels, can be dated to the first half of the 3rd century AD. The most frequently found pieces remaining from bottles are the base fragments of square bottles with different ornamentation. More than 60 such fragments were collected from Brigetio, including 18 with a decorative pattern. Two fragments bear an inscription (‘L PVBLIC’, ‘P/CL/A/CP’) and suggest interesting directions of trade relations.
