Abstract

Present study examines the commissions and purchases of the Hungarian magnate Ferenc II Nádasdy’s (1555–1604) court for the coronation of Habsburg Rudolf for Hungarian king held in Pozsony/Bratislava in 1572. The analysis is based on recently discovered archival documents (accounts and lists) written by Nádasdy’s chamberlain, Kristóf Lőrincfalvay. The young Hungarian aristocrat, Ferenc Nádasdy was the only son of the former leader of the Hungarian secular elite, the late palatine Tamás Nádasdy (1498–1562) and his erudite wife, Orsolya Kanizsay (1520–1571). The young Ferenc lived between 1567–1569 in the Nádasdy palace in Vienna next to the Hofburg and he regularly met Maximilan II’s sons Archdukes Rudolf and Ernest. In 1572 Nádasdy has got two special tasks at Rudolf’s coronation ceremony: he carried the Hungary’s main flag among the Kingdom’s ten coronation flags at the entries and processions and in addition he served together with other young Hungarian aristocrats at the table of the new king Rudolf during the coronation banquet. Nádasdy and his large retinue of 180 horsemen attended the entries and processions of the coronation festivities in richly decorated garments and weapons. His court purchased – also in Vienna and very probably in Venice – a large amount of textiles and other accessories for the retinue’s liveries and equipment (e.g., flags, lances) as well as commissioned a lot of (in part gilded) silver accessories (horse trappings, helmets etc.) for the occasion. These various silver objects were made by a goldsmith named “Master Andreas” who worked in Sárvár, possibly in the family’s castle.
