Abstract
The study explores the charity activities of the Hungarian National Theatre in the nineteenth century. The object of the analysis has been selected on the grounds that the later National Theatre, opened as the Hungarian Theatre of Pest on 22 August 1837, was the first institution in the history of institutionalised Hungarian-language dramatics whose financial situation, especially after its maintenance had become state-supported in 1841, allowed for charitable activities. As time went by, the Theatre offerred various forms of financial support; charitable performances and other forms of charity aids are reported on. Thanks to manuscript sources related to the internal working of the institution, the amount which the Theatre devoted to charitable purposes each year can be reconstructed, and so can the social cooperation that was engineered by the charity performances, that is, how many tickets were sold and to which classes.
