Abstract

The lowland oak hornbeam forests along the Rába River in Western Hungary grow on the floodplain in habitats influenced by groundwater. They exhibit characteristics of hardwood riparian forests, and as such, are certainly extrazonal. I studied the phytosociological characteristics of these forests with the help of 50 phytosociological samples. The high frequency of submontane elements, such as Adoxa moschatellina, Anemone nemorosa, Asarum europaeum, Athyrium filix-femina, Corydalis cava, Corydalis solida, Euphorbia dulcis, Gagea lutea, Galanthus nivalis, Galeobdolon luteum, Geranium phaeum, Isopyrum thalictroides, Lathraea squamaria, Milium effusum, Omphalodes scorpioides, Pimpinella major, Polygonatum multiflorum, Pulmonaria officinalis, Ranunculus lanuginosus, Stellaria holostea, Veronica montana etc. is particularly characteristic of them. It is possible that these species are relicts of an earlier climatic stage (Beech I. phase) during the Holocene characterized by cooler temperatures and more precipitation. The occurrence of some sub-Mediterranean species (Carex strigosa, Knautia drymeia) suggests some connection to the oak-hornbeam forests in the neighboring Zala Hills (Helleboro dumetorum-Carpinetum). The forests in the Rába valley are sharply distinct from the oak-hornbeam forests on the foothills and mountain sides in Western Transdanubia (Cyclamini-Carpinetum), and share several features with the oak-hornbeam forests on the Rába floodplain (Veronico montanae-Carpinetum).
