Abstract
The chronicle of Pethő Gergely enjoyed unprecedented popularity up until the end of the 18th century. Several editions were published with the contribution of the Jesuit author Spangár András who continued to weave the thread of Hungarian history until his own day. In my study, I would like to show that the story of Ban Bánk – which is most probably an incorporation of a short story by Antonio Bonfini into the story of the murder of Gertrudis – is given a very special emphasis by Pethő. King Endre, by declaring the deed of Ban Bánk just, since his wife deserved to die, proved that he was worthy of leading the Fifth Crusade to retake the Holy Land, that the capture of Damietta was in fact his achievement, and that he therefore deserves the same respect as his two predecessors, canonized kings István and László. Moreover, he even makes a remark about the German wife of St István which is not very German-loving of all.
