Abstract
In the publication, I attempt to distinguish conceptually between 13th and 14th century dress fasteners and belt buckles, and to more accurately identify the function of dress fasteners. I present possible ways of wearing and making dress fasteners. I reflect on the claims of other researchers and compare their results with my own theory and experiences. The main assertion of my publication is that objects sometimes identified as dress fasteners, buckles or belt buckles were originally used predominantly as dress fasteners, i.e., as brooches, in most cases. I exclude the possibility of these types of objects being worn as belt buckles – except for circular brooches – due to their formal characteristics
