Abstract

Nowadays, the life expectancy of the population in economically developed societies is constantly increasing, so age-related health problems are a serious challenge for the health care system. One of them is Alzheimer’s disease − referred to as “type 3 diabetes mellitus” in several studies− which considering its pathomechanism, through the insulin resistance in the central nervous system is closely related to type 2 diabetes. More and more researches are dealing with the role of the microbial system in many disease groups. Recently published experimental observations have shown the role of many microorganisms in both above-mentioned pathologies. Our article reviews the common points of development of the two conditions, summarizes the microbial changes appearing in type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as in Alzheimer’s disease, and compares their similarities. © Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest.
